Lance Green is a master colorist & expressionist extraordinaire. His paintings brim with unheard of hues & burst with primitive emotion. With a maturity in his work that only comes from decades of fearless exploration & a disciplined ability to paint by deep primal instinct, he works his magic in a state of total abandonment, beckoning the observer to enter into a similar state. His work deals directly with his own personal experiences & those he observes in others, ranging from his simple enjoyment of taking in the beauty of creation & celebrating the joys of life to struggling with the darkest of demons. One particular recurring theme that is a constant impetus to Lance’s work is his life partner Lisa’s challenge with multiple sclerosis. This has led him to explore the healing power to be found in art. His own shamanistic images come alive with tremors of intense, yet controlled energy that exudes the integrating soul of the artist, marrying both ancient & personal mythologies. Lance brings one into an encounter with the transcendent & beatific, as well as the dark & mysterious. Many of his works are self portraits of a sort, yet all are universal in their deepest application, expressing the human paradox of grace & despair. There is a dark whimsy, an anxious optimism in the work that somehow speaks a secret language, bringing one to rest deeply in the conviction of an ultimate redemption in all things.

Lance was born in Denver, Colorado in 1953 & was raised there until age ten. For several years to come he moved all around the southwest with his mother & stepfather. Living in the majestic high country of the Colorado Rocky Mountains, the bayous of Lake Texarkana & the high deserts of New Mexico & Arizona where he was immersed in Native Art & Culture. Finally he & his family settled in the East Los Angeles area where he attended high school & developed a deep love for Latin Art & culture. His high school art teacher, Linda Stevens, took an interest in him & gave him the instruction & guidance needed to set his life course as an artist. He majored in art at Rio Hondo College in East L.A., & studied briefly with Bob Peak & Ben Shahn. In the late 1990’s he did a series of intensive workshops with the late contemporary Master Fritz Scholder. His influences include the Bay Are Figurative Expressionists Nathan Oliviera, Manuel Neri, Elmer Bischoff, & Richard Deibenkorn. Inspiration also comes from the German Expressionists, Jean Dubuffet & Modern Mexican Masters Laura Hernandez & Rufino Tamayo. However, apart from influences, Lance is a pioneer in the world of contemporary painting exploring worlds previously uncharted.

Lance now resides in the Black Forest of Colorado & paints in his lakeside studio at the Tri Lakes Center for the Arts in Palmer Lake, Colorado.

He currently shows at Walden Fine Arts in Taos & Deloney Newkirk Gallery in Santa Fe, New Mexico, Stoneheart Gallery in Evergreen & the Business of Art Center in Manitou Springs, Colorado.
