Artist Statement

I rarely set out to create something specific.  I may  start with a concept, a mood, words, or even nothing but the desire to create.  I like to let  the painting evolve in stages.  I often apply several layers of translucent paint overlapping each previous layer to achieve a depth and glow. Other times, I remove paint with a rag creating an absence that becomes the focal point of the piece.  I do not know what the outcome will be or what the painting means to me until it is complete.  When I feel an equilibrium and calm inside,  it becomes clear to me what I was expressing. Then I know I have purged myself of whatever it was.  This satiated feeling fades  and before long I am readying for battle against another stark white canvas.

Each work is a slice of a moment in time. A place that some part of my subconscious passed through. It can not be revisited, and that is what makes each piece so significant to me.  The color, texture, and movement in my work are all part of a balancing act that I strive to achieve.

My paintings may best be described as abstract surrealism.  I have struck on something intangible but familiar.  I believe I express the common known indefinable that is within each of us.  There is something primal about this deep imagery.  My work lends itself to imaginative interpretation.  Everyone seems to notice a different nuance or has a different feeling when viewing the paintings.  I love to see what others see in my creation.

From nothing and nowhere, we create and see.  The artist and viewer collectively dance on the ethereal plane to bring meaning to the image.   For me, this is the beauty and ultimate value of visual art.

 Bio

Daniel Voigt paints on instinct.  His paintings have been described as abstract surrealism.  He was born in Englewood, NJ,  USA.   He has lived  up and down the east coast of the United States, traveled across America, Europe, the Caribbean, Mexico, and very often his own mind.  Interested in many creative disciplines, Daniel has expressed himself in several mediums including Lutherie, woodworking, sculpture, drawing, airbrushing, music, and painting.  His primary expression as a young man was in music.  He did this mainly as a singer and songwriter, a guitar player, and a builder of acoustic instruments.  A few oil paints, brushes, and canvasses given as a gift from his wife changed his creative direction passionately.  Daniel Voigt is a self taught and constantly evolving artist.  He lives with his Wife and Son in Colorado.
