Materials & Process I create these sculptures using my own original process: I construct the framework for each piece out of found branches bound together with wax and twine, then I make thin pieces of handmade abaca paper and apply it wet to the armature to form the skin-like surfaces. The part of the process is the most time consuming, as each section, defined by a space framed by branches, must be individually covered by a separate piece of wet paper then sealed from the back. Small 'poetic' natural objects are occasionally embedded in the paper while it’s still wet. In order to incorporate images or to enhance the surface qualities, I paint melted, pigmented beeswax (or varnish, on occasion) on the surface of the paper (once dry), then re-melt the wax in place, so it penetrates the paper completely, and to remove any excess wax. This treatment works to protect it and give it a rich, lustrous, translucent finish. Sometimes I do chalk pastel drawings on the paper before applying the wax, and occasionally I add oil pastels over the finished wax surface. I often incorporate low-wattage internal lighting, or different materials and objects, such as stones, earth, leaves, and seedpods to complete the pieces. To maintain the highest standards, I personally perform all the creative aspects involved in my work, without the use of apprentices or assistants.
