Artist Philosophy

I call my art Ecocentric Expressionism. Expressionistic art that is nature centered. As the artist I am the conduit of communication. The artwork is meant to be a communication of joy. It’s about nature and about my love of nature, about how I’ve found deep nurturing, and healing in its presence. It’s about how grateful I am for finding such a love as the trees and the grasses and the rocks and rivers. The artistic expression comes from my emotional reaction to the awareness that the natural world all around me is communicating to me. It is communicating a total unconditional loving acceptance of the perfection of the moment in which I am apart, a concept that is felt as joy even in my moments of deepest sorrow and loneliness. My first goal as the artist is to be totally open to the voice of the natural world around me. I humbly ask the natural world to speak to me of its wisdom. I achieve this by walking with nature and being still with nature for many, many hours. My second goal is to successfully communicate the joy and wisdom of nature through expressionistic imagery.  The human spirit’s natural language is beauty. Awareness of beauty and the sincere emotion of the human heart is our communication link to the voice of nature. When people smile and become happy and even a little excited when they see my paintings of the grasses and flowers, the berry bushes and trees, and the rocks and waters and skies, I know as an artist I’ve succeeded.

Technical Process

I sew the canvas into ridgelines to create a surface texture. Sometimes the ridgelines separate the painting into compositional sections, other times they are integrated into the imagery. Since I work totally from my imagination, the ridges on the blank canvas become my initial guide to composition and subject. I have always liked texturally rich paintings and the depth of color of oils. In my search for texture the under-painting has become integral. I build up layers of charcoal, gels, acrylic paint, earthen grits and micas to develop the imagery. When the under-painting begins to speak to me of the final composition I switch to the rich warm colors of oil paint to create the finished painting.
